Da Nang, Vietnam — September 30, 2025 – October 4, 2025
With one of the best crowds and atmospheres pro pickleball has ever seen, Vietnam showed why its pickleball scene is poised to explode in the years ahead.
A total of 566 players competed at the MB Vietnam Cup, held at the Tien Son Sport Centre, where fans packed the stands with roaring applause for some of the most exciting matches Asia has hosted to date.
Highlights
-
Alix Truong and Jonathan Truong (11–4 as partners) triumphantly claimed their first gold medal together after back-to-back bronzes at the PPA Malaysia Cup and PPA Vietnam Open.
- Kaitlyn Christian collected her fourth medal in Asia, winning her second consecutive gold in women’s doubles with Chao Yi Wang (8–0 as partners). Christian narrowly missed a fifth medal after being forced to withdraw from the women’s singles bronze match.
- Another disappointing Asian tournament for World No. 1 Ben Johns, as he and Dekel Bar fell to Zane Navratil and Armaan Bhatia in a controversial yet thrilling Game 3 of the semifinals.
- Eric Oncins and Tyson McGuffin struck gold yet again after a three-game thriller against Navratil and Bhatia, capping their Asia tour with a pickle in the third game. They remain undefeated as men’s doubles partners heading back to the U.S.
Men’s Doubles
Gold: Eric Oncins & Tyson McGuffin
Silver: Armaan Bhatia & Zane Navratil
Bronze: Ben Johns & Dekel Bar
- Oncins and McGuffin claimed their second straight men’s gold medal in dramatic fashion. They pickled Navratil and Bhatia in the decider (11–5, 9–11, 11–0) to remain a perfect 8–0 as partners. Could this be the start of a dominant new doubles duo? We’ll find out soon, as they won’t be paired at the upcoming PPA Virginia Beach Cup.
- After a disappointing semifinal loss, Ben Johns and Dekel Bar rebounded to secure bronze over Harsh Mehta and Vanshik Kapadia (11–9, 9–11, 11–9). Although it’s great to see Johns competing internationally, questions linger: is travel fatigue affecting him, or does he simply miss his usual partner, Gabe Tardio?
Women’s Doubles
Gold: Chao Yi Wang & Kaitlyn Christian
Silver: Alix Truong & Ting Chieh Wei
Bronze: Danni-Elle Townsend & Nicola Schoeman
- Christian and Wang continued their dominance in Asia, taking another gold in straight games over Truong and Wei (11–8, 11–8). Truong earned her second medal of the day as she and her partner wrapped their Asia tour with a 4–2 record together.
- Townsend and Schoeman fought through an intense opening game before clinching bronze in three (12–10, 11–8, 11–6), capping their best performance of the season.
Mixed Doubles
Gold: Alix Truong & Jonathan Truong Silver: Chao Yi Wang & Tyson McGuffin Bronze: Danni-Elle Townsend & Zane Navratil
- The Truongs finally broke through with their first gold medal, showcasing brilliant chemistry and consistency throughout the draw. They defeated Wang and McGuffin convincingly (11–1, 11–6) in a statement win.
- Townsend picked up her second bronze of the day alongside Navratil, as the pair dispatched Roos Van Reek and Eric Oncins in straight games.
Men’s Singles
Gold: Phuc Huynh
Silver: Hien Truong
Bronze: Hoang Nam Ly
- Vietnamese players swept the podium in Da Nang, taking all three medals in men’s singles. Notably, Mitchell Hargreaves and Eric Oncins exited early in the quarterfinals and round of 16, respectively.
- In the final, Phuc Huynh dominated Hien Truong (11–0, 11–4) for his first gold medal since the PPA Vietnam Open earlier this year, improving to a 22–12 record in 2025. Hoang Nam Ly claimed bronze after Thomas Yu was forced to withdraw due to injury.
Women’s Singles
Gold: Sara Dennehy
Silver: Liz Truluck
Bronze: Roos Van Reek
- Sara Dennehy earned her first Asian gold medal with an impressive win over Truluck (11–5, 11–7), marking her best performance abroad to date. The victory also extended Dennehy’s head-to-head lead over Truluck to 3–1.
- After finishing with silver in Malaysia, Roos Van Reek added another medal to her resume, claiming bronze by walkover after Kaitlyn Christian’s withdrawal. Van Reek now boasts an outstanding 42–12 record in 2025, highlighting her steady rise throughout the season.
